What Is an Image Aspect Ratio?
Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between an image's width and its height. It is written as two numbers separated by a colon, for example, 16:9 means the image is 16 units wide for every 9 units tall. The actual pixel dimensions can vary (a 1920×1080 image and a 3840×2160 image both have a 16:9 ratio), but the proportional shape stays the same.
Think of it this way: a 4:3 photo is slightly wider than it is tall, like an old television screen. A 16:9 photo is much wider, like a modern widescreen TV.
